Red rot of sugarcane caused by Colletotrichum falcatum is a major constraint in sugarcane production causing substantial loss in yield and quality. Use of biocontrol agents is an effective, eco-friendly and non-hazardous possibility for red rot management. In the present investigation potential bio-control agents were screened against C. falcatum on sugarcane. Among the 15 species/ isolates of bacterial and fungal antagonistic organisms screened against C. falcatum in dual culture, Pseudomonas fluorescens isolate-1 and Trichoderma viride isolate-3 showed maximum inhibitory effect on C. falcatum. These two isolates identified as more potential biocontrol agents in the present investigation can be exploited to control red rot of sugarcane. Keywords

Experiments were carried out to develop an effective biocontrol method against sugarcane red rot disease under field conditions in sugarcane var. CoC-671. Integrated approach as sett treatment + foliar spray + soil application of the antagonistic organism Pseudomonas fluorescens recorded the lowest disease incidence (10.37 per cent), higher germination (77.67 per cent), more number of tillers (2.67/ha), economic shoots (1.95/ha) and increased yield (47.80tonnes/ha), highest brix value (21.27 per cent), sucrose (18.67 per cent) and commercial cane sugar (10.86 per cent) in the sugar cane var. CoC-671.Keywords

Four different organic matter sources (dried leaf materials of Azadiracta indica, Madhuca indica, Morinda tinctoria, Peltophorum pterocarpum and Thespesia populnea), tested against Pythium indicum, either alone or in combination with Thchoderma viride. Application of T. viride and Thespesia leaf recorded maximum seed germination (100 %), low disease incidence (5,0 %), increased seedling growth (15.6 cm/pl), seedling vigour index (1560), and seedling biomass (23.8 mg/pl) in P. indicum inoculated unsteilized soil. Keywords

All organic matter sources showed inhibitory effect on the in vitro growth of Pythium indicum M.S. Balakr., while most of them support the growth of Trichoderma viride Pers.: Fr. Several organic matter sources increase the production of PTE-ase and Protease enzymes of fungal antagonist. However, the synthesis of Protease enzyme by pathogen was suppressed by all organic matter sources, while PTE·ase enzyme production was inhibited by few organic matter sources. Synthesis of cellulase by P. indicum was induced by many organic matter sources, but in case of T. viride. the same was inhibited except neem cake and wheat bran. Out of 12 organic matter sources tested, Neem cake and Wheat bran support the antagonist on its in vitro growth and synthesis of all the three enzymes as compared to control! pathogen. Keywords

Trichoderma viride, T. harzianum, Laetisaria arvalis and other eight isolates of Trichoderma viride, isolated locally. were tested in vitro for their antagonistic activity against Pythium indicum. the causal organism of danlping-off of tomato, by dual agar technique. Among the fungal antagonists tested, Trichoderma viride was found highly inhibitory to P. indicllm. Volatile and non-volatile antibiotics of T. viride inhibited the in vitro growth of P. indicum significantly. Keywords
