This study was done to compare laryngeal mask airway insertion and Endotracheal intubation for incidence of immediate postoperative airway complications i.e.laryngospasm, coughing and oxygen desaturation (<95%) following general anaesthesia in 72 children of ASA grade I and II between the age group of 5-15 years. Preoperative preparation, premedication and induction were similar in both the groups. LMA insertion or Endotracheal intubation was carried out according to the groups allocated. Monitoring of the patients for laryngospam, coughing and oxygen desaturation (<95%) was done for a period of 60 minutes. The incidence of oxygen desaturation (<95%) was significantly higher in the ETT group as compared to LMA group.None of the patients in either group had laryngospasm. LMA can be a suitable alternative to an ETT for conducting general anaesthesia for elective surgeries in children.
