Prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection among Hemodialysis(HD) Patients in Aleppo City, Syria

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) among hemodialysis patients in Aleppo city, Syria during the period from April to June 2013.

Materials and methods: A total of seventy one hemodialysis patients, were enrolled in this study. Blood specimens were collected and examined by ELISA technique for the detection of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and HCV antibodies (Anti HCV).

Results: HBsAg was detected among 9 (12.7%) patients, while 51 (71.8%) patients had HCV infection. Most of patients were males 39 (54.9%), and their age ranged between 14 to 90 with mean age of 42 years. Age, marital status, and the HD center were not statistically significant in HBV and HCV infection. Main risk factors in hemodialysis patients infected by HBV were time duration on HD and vaccination status. Time duration on HD was the most important risk factor in HCV infection.

Conclusion: The frequency of HBV and HCV among the studied population is remarkably high. Education about dangerous behaviors along with screening, vaccination, and appropriate treatment for hepatitis is strongly recommended to control this persistent infectious source of hepatitis B and C in the community.
