Hypoglycemic Activity of Ethyl Acetate Fraction of Mengkudu Fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) in Mice Induced Alloxan
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Complementary medicine for diabetes mellitus using medicinal plants is the solution chosen as an alternative treatment. Mengkudu fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) is empirically used by the community for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. To study the hypoglycemic activity of subfraction mengkudu fruit in mice induced alloxan. The test results on subfraction of ethyl acetate fraction (dose 150 mg/kgBW) induced alloxan (dose 175 mg/kgBW) showed that there was a decrease in blood glucose levels including Mc-IIb (33.94%), Mc-IIc (32.21%), Mc-IIa (29.58%), Mc-IId (18.16%) and Mc-IIe (8.09%) were significantly different compared to the negative control (p<0.05). Subfraction Mc-IIb shows that the most active hypoglycemic activity may be due to some secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, and polyphenols as antidiabetic bioactive principles. These research showed that Mc-IIb subfraction indicates the highest hypoglycemic activity. However, the research for the active hypoglycemic compound of Mc-IIb subfraction needs to be explored further.
