Investigation of Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Kaempferia galanga L.

This research was performed to determine the antioxidant, total phenolic content and cytotoxicity activities of methanol and acetone extracts of Kaempferia galanga Linn (Zingiberaceae) leaves. In this particular study, In vitro antioxidant activity of the extracts of Kaempferia galanga L. leaves was determined by using DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydraziyl) free radical scavenging assay. Here, both Standards butyl-1-hydroxyl toluene (BHT) and ascorbic acid (ASA) showed IC50 value of 28.30 μg/mL and 5.90 μg/mL. Compared to the standard crude methanol extract (CME) and crude acetone extract (CAE) showed IC50 value of 611.82 μg/mL and 702.79 μg/mL. In total phenolic content test, CME showed 1.012 mg of gallic acid equivalents/gm and CAE showed -0.066 mg of gallic acid equivalents/gm. Moreover, brine shrimp lethality bioassay was performed to determine the cytotoxic effect and the LC50 value of the CME and CAE were 4.78 μg/mL and 0.11 μg/mL. Whereas, LC50 value of the vincristine sulphate was 0.45 μg/mL. In conclusion, this research confirmed that Kaempferia galanga L. leaves comprised with antioxidant and cytotoxicity activity which can be used for various medicinal purposes.
