Relationship Between Obesity and Gingivitis

Objective: Obesity is a chronic disease of a multifactorial cause that affects the general population. Obesity has been recommended to be a one of the risk factors of periodontal diseases. The aim of current study was to evaluate the relationship of obesity and gingivitis. Method: About 300 gingivitis patients were incorporated in the study, their clinical periodontal parameters were recorded and body mass index for each of them were calculated. The patients were classified according to their body mass index as: normal range, over weight and obese groups. Results: Results of current study demonstrated that obese patients had the highest means of plaque index, gingival index and bleeding on probing, while these parameters were lower in patients with normal weight than over weight patients with statistically significant differences among them. There were direct statistically significant correlations among body mass index and periodontal parameters in all groups. Conclusion: As a conclusion a significant relationship between obesity and gingivitis may be present, also body mass index can be considered as a predictor of high periodontal measurements.
