Bilayer Floating Tablets: An Updated Review
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Various technologies for developing the rate controlled oral drug delivery system were introduced to overcome various physiological problems and to increase the bioavailability of various drugs. Recently bilayer tablets were introduced to attain the combination of different drugs in a single dosage form to prevent incompatibilities, achieve more patient compliance and therapeutic efficiency. Bilayer tablets are the tablets, which consist of two layers in which one layer is designed for sustained release and another layer for immediate release. In bilayer-floating tablet the sustained release is obtained by floating mechanism in which the drug is being made gastro-buoyant by the release of carbondioxide from the ingredients incorporated in it. It is also adopted for improving drug solubility. This review is an attempt to illustrate the major concepts of bilayer-floating tablets.
