About SRELS

Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS) was founded by Dr.S.R.Ranganathan, renowned Library and Information Scientist in 1961. The endowment was registered as a Charitable Endowment with the Government of India in 1963 and with Government of Karnataka in 2006.

 The Aims and Objectives of the Endowment are:

  •  To improve the library and information services in India.
  •  To train library and information service personnel.
  •  To promote the provision of efficient library and information service.
  •  To apply research results of library and information studies.

The Endowment is implementing these objectives by publishing books, reports and the periodical SRELS Journal of Information Management and by organising Workshops, Lectures and Seminars. SRELS Journal of Information Management jhas now completed 50 years of publication in 2013.

The Endowment organises three series of lectures:

Sarada Ranganathan Endowment Lectures (1965-)

Dr.S.R.Ranganathan Memorial Lectures (1973-)

Curzonco-Seshachalam Endowment Lectures (2001-)

Apart from these, some of the recent Projects include:

 Designing and developing interfaces in Indian languages - Kannada and Tamil - for the Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL); supported by the University of Waikato, New Zealand and elFL, The Netherlands.

Building a multilingual dictionary - English-Tamil-Kannada-to enable multilingual cross database search and retrieval with GSDL, software.

Developing a bilingual - English-Kannada - version of Colon Classification, edition 7 with revisions; in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore.

A pilot project to generate a thesaurus structure from the schedules of English-Kannada Colon Classification, and to upload the thesaurus on to the web.

Building a digital repository of the papers published in the SRELS Journal of Information Management (Vols 1-50)

 Continuation of the project - a Tamil-English thesaurus based on the Tamil Lexicon (Madras University, Vol.6) with hyperlinks to the online version of the Tamil Lexicon maintained at the University of Chicago, USA. The thesaurus currently contains over 119000 descriptions (English and Tamil). The project is assigned to SRELS by the Centre for Classical Tamil, Chennai.
