The paper presents findings of the study of socio-economic status, use of electronic media and benefits derived from the use of these media by rural community in Gulbarga District, Karnataka State, India. Per capita income of 88% of the study population is less than Rs. 20,000/- which is less than the national and State per capita income. Television and Radio are the most frequently used electronic media by more than 90% of them, mainly for entertainment purpose. While Cell Phone is used by 78%, use of Internet is restricted to only 12%. Major benefits of electronic media are improvement in social life and general knowledge. Findings indicate that electronic media has played a marginal role in rural development. Television and Radio need to play a major role, not only as entertainers and news providers, but also as facilitators of local change and rural development. Capabilities of cell phone need to be used extensively to provide region specific information through SMS. Internet can play a greater role in rural development, if it is accessible to them at affordable cost, in their locality, in local language. Keywords

Library use study helps in understanding the pattern of use of reading materials and provides basis for developing need-based document collection and redesigning their services. Results of the study of use of reading materials by B.E. and M.Tech. students, and teachers, and opinion of librarians regarding the use of reading materials by students and teachers in 50 Engineering Colleges in Karnataka State, including three deemed universities are presented. Majority of students and teachers visit library at least once in a week and on an average, they spend less than two hours during each visit. Purpose of visit to library is mainly to borrow text books. Students and teachers vary in their approach to locate reading materials in the library. Students directly go to the shelves and search for reading materials, while teachers consult OPAC to locate required reading materials. Students are found to use informal channels like discussion with friends and teachers, while teachers depend more on books and journals to satisfy their information needs. While B.E. students use reading materials mainly to prepare for examination and seminars, M.Tech. students use them for completing their project work. Teachers use the reading materials in the library mainly for teaching, preparation of research articles and research project reports. Text books and Indian journals are the most frequently used documents in the library. All the users are satisfied with the text book collection and Indian journals in their libraries. A strong positive association is found in the opinion among students, teachers and librarians regarding the above aspects, except the adequacy of document collection where there is only a marginal association. Keywords

A survey of use of information resources and services in Public Libraries in Gulbarga district was undertaken with questionnaire as a data collection tool. Nine branch libraries located in taluka headquarters in Gulbarga district, Karnataka State were selected and 50 questionnaire were distributed in each library under study. Out of 450 questionnaire distributed, 259 users responded (57.7%). The main purpose of the study was to evaluate effectiveness of public libraries from users' point of view. The findings include that majority of the users are men and between 11 - 30 years of age. Students, Job holders in private / public undertakings were the regular visitors to the library, who visited the library daily or at least once in two days, mainly to read newspapers and magazines. Users from lower and middle income group use public library services very frequently (either daily or once in two days). Most of them have completed 12 years of schooling or undergraduate degree. Newspapers and Magazine and Reading Room Service are the most frequently used information resources and services respectively. Majority of the users are fairly satisfied with information resources. Only two women (0.77%) and 04 men above 60 years of age (1.54%) visited library during study period. Majority of the respondents are either neutral or not satisfied with Book Lending and Reference Service. The results clearly indicate the need for public libraries to strengthen their document collection and create a better ambience to attract more users from all age groups and gender. More trained personnel are necessary to manage the document collection efficiently and offer innovative library services. Keywords

Plastics is a product of Polymers, which finds a wide variety of applications. Bibliometric analysis of 6444 publications related to Plastics, as indexed in Biological Abstracts on CD, during 1998-2002 was undertaken. On an average, 1289 papers were published every year. Two and more authored papers constitute majority of the contributions and degree of collaboration amounts to 0.81. This shows that team research is prevalent in the area of Plastics. USA produces largest amount of literature related to Plastics and English is the most predominant language used for publishing the literature related to Plastics during the study period. Keywords

In the last few years, librarians of the academic institutions are more worried by their patrons' delinquent acts which have begun to threaten the resources and services of their libraries. Of the 1254 students sampled from eight engineering colleges in Karnataka State, India, 515 (41 %) admitted to stealing books, 536 students (42.7%) admitted to mutilating books, while 564 students (45%) admitted to have intentionally misplaced books at least once in their libraries, Non-delinquent students amounted to 690 (55%) of the sample. When students come acros's books being stolen/mutilated/misplaced by their friends they would either ask them to stop such act report to librarian, or just ignore it. The study revealed that high cost of books lack of photocopying facility and library environment are the major reasons for such delinquent acts of the students. Warning the delinquent students against such acts, withdrawal of their library membership, or imposing penalty are the punishment suggested by students and librarians. Preventive measures suggested include provision of more copies of text books. provision of photocopying facility at affordable cost, and organizing regular library tour and orientation talks in the library. A positive association is observed in the attitude of students and librarians in the above areas, even though the extent of association varies. Keywords

In the present study, the rate of growth of Indian earth science literature was determined by calculating relative growth rates and doubling time for total number of all types of publications and pages separately for the period 1978-88. The results show that the mean relative growth rate has shown a declining trend from 0.35 during 1979-83 to 0.11 during 1984-88. Correspondingly, mean doubling time has increased from 2.6 years to 7 years for the same periods. The mean doubling time for Indian earth science literature is 4.8 years which is slightly less than the growth rate of earth science literature as a whole. The growth curves and chi-square values obtained show that the growth of Indian earth science literature follows logistic pattern of growth. The results of the study related to scientific productivity of authors show that the percentage of authors contributing olle publication is 63% of the total number of authors which is fairly close to Lotka's predicted value of 60%. The scientific productivity of authors is found to conform to Lotka's law and distribution of the scientific productivity follows negative binomial distribution. Keywords

The University of Horticultural Sciences was established in Karnataka State with headquarter in Bagalkote on 22 November 2008 by the Government of Karnataka, India. A survey of the use of information resources and library services by the students of eight Colleges of Horticulture, affiliated to the University of Horticultural Sciences was undertaken. Students enrolled for undergraduate course constitute 84.14% of the total student population. Hence, the findings of the study are biased towards the undergraduate students. Findings of the study reveal that majority of the students visit library daily or at least twice in a week and spend less than two hours during their visit. They visit library to borrow text books, general books in Horticulture and allied fields, read newspapers, magazines, and Indian and foreign journals. Reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedia are consulted rarely. Majority of the students never accessed bibliographic databases on CD/ROM or DVD and web resources. This may be due to the ignorance about the academic value of these resources or lack of technical skills. The situation calls for training them in information literacy skills to identify, locate, evaluate and use both print and electronic information resources efficiently, so that they can become independent and life long learners. Further, Reference service and Book lending service are very frequently used by the students. Photocopying facility is occasionally used or never used by majority of the students. It is necessary to provide Photocopying facility at affordable cost, which also helps in minimizing the misuse of print resources in the library. Keywords

An attempt is made to study the usefulness of e-Governance services offered in Nadakacheris, problems faced by citizens and status of public libraries which have major role to play in creating awareness about these services among Citizens. Majority of the users are between the age group of 21-40 years and 94 of them are graduates. Citizens from different walks of life such as farmers, employees in Government/private sectors, students and housewives are using the services of Nadakacheri. Major problems faced by the Citizens are lack of awareness about necessary documents to be carried. The study also recognizes the role of public libraries which are providing library services to the citizens, particularly in rural areas, where public libraries can be hub for integrated citizen’s oriented services by adopting Information Communication Technology (ICT).Keywords
