The order Orthoptera occurs in a variety of terrestrial ecosystems and serves as an important primary consumer and prey base for bats, birds and spiders. Orthopteran communities are affected by vegetation structure and composition and respond strongly to changes in plant community composition. Hence, they are suitable for monitoring and conservation studies.
