It is agreed on all hands t h a t improvement of quality is an import a n t outcome of the standardization process. The author reviews in this paper recent developments in the USSR, Great Britain and Japan in this regard and makes some suggestions to help the personnel engaged in standardization and certification activities discharge their responsibility of ensuring quality improvement in line with the expectations of the consumers - both national and overseas. These concern not only standards formulation and certification but also design of products, cost factor and research and development besides formation of quality circles in industry - Ed.
