There is an increased incidence of Metabolic Syndrome across the globe. Metabolic Syndrome a strong predictor of coronary vascular disorder and Diabetes Mellitus is not highlighted enough especially in post menopausal women. This study was undertaken to learn the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in perimenopausal and menopausal women. A detailed history, clinical examination along with mini glucose tolerance test, FBS and PPBS in a known diabetic and fasting lipid profile were done in 696 women. Among them 208 (29.88%) are in perimenopausal group and 488 (70.11%) are in post menopause group. Metabolic Syndrome was defined using Modified NCEP ATP III Criteria. Metabolic syndrome was found in 468 (67.24%) among them 131 (28%) are in perimenopausal group and 337 (72%) are in post menopausal group. Age group of women with Metabolic Syndrome in the range 40-44 years were 65 (13.88%), 45-49 years were 86 (18.37%), 50-54 years were 65 (13.88%), 55-60 years were 128 (27.35%), 60-65 years were 49 (10.47%) and 66 years and above were 75 (16.02%). Considering the individual components of Metabolic Syndrome Waist circumference was ≥ 80 cm in 365 (77.99%), Systolic blood pressure was ≥ 130 mm Hg in 396 (84.61%), Diastolic blood pressure was ≥ 85 mm Hg in 293 (62.60%), Triglycerides were ≥ 150 mg/dl in 277 (59.18%), High density lipoproteins were ≥ 50 mg/dl in 421 (89.95%) and Fasting blood sugars were ≥ 110 mg/dl in 121 (25.85%). Our study showed increased prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in post menopausal women.
