High level of biotic interference, unscientific development and myopic policies have caused considerable damage to the ecosystem of Central Himalaya. This study was carried out to find out the ground realities responsible for the debacle. There is an urgent need to review the existing policies and programmes so that the whole system becomes self sustaining. Time is still with us. A pragmatic approach, that works within the framework of nature's law and satisfies the human requirements, is required to achieve the expected levels of productivity.
