Impact of Communication Technology on Libraries and Information Services

Communication is a service and not consumer commodity, Today information is a prime resource and a dominant factor in decision making. Now access to information is of first priority than the document. This paper mainly focuses on the nature of communication technology and highlights various modes of mass communication through Computer and Internet, thereby having impact on libraries and information services. Great reliability, storage and universal availability are the vital characteristics possessed by Communication Technology. This paper concerns with how library services are best served by the adaptation of such technology in this digital era. Paper further focuses on digital library concept and comparison of traditional to the modern library. The speed of Information Technology (IT) revolution is in top gear, during this decade, and makes the library to a global library system to operate it at our finger tips. IT serves as a vehicle for future development. Finally, the paper concludes with many advantages of the communication technology with respect to library requirements.
