Authority control is used to establish standardized/authorized key access points and references to ensure effective access to library catalogue/database. The effective and efficient retrieval of information from bibliographical database calls for maintaining consistency and quality while entering the data as per the accepted format. standards and related tools. This paper covers one of the tools viz., authority file, its type requirement for the bibliographic database development and authority file systems for manual and automated libraries for efficient and qualitative setvicc. Paper also deals with national and local level requirements for creating authority file in India, with special reference to Marc 21 Format of authority data.
