Retrospective conversion is to convert library's existing bibliographic records into machine-readable format. A brute force method of typing in all the information will take an enormous amount of time for a large library. An approach for retrospective conversion that was employed by IIT-KLAS the library automation project at IIT, Kanpur is described. The approach uses commercially available CD-ROM databases to reduce the effort. Discusses the issues involved in using such an approach and how these were resolved for iit-KLAS.
