A great deal has been written in the last few years about the so-called strategic role of information in the enterprise. Thus we've heard the terms strategic information management, strategic information planning, strategic control of information. But what do all these terms mean? What's the difference between all this recent attention to strategic and what we've always done? Is it just hype, the latest buzzword? Is it old wine poured into new bottles? Or is there something of substance to the idea? This brief article, based on ideas first articulated at the 46th Biennial FID Congress in Madrid, Spain in October 1992, examines this proposition.

Abstract

A great deal has been written in the last few years about the so-called strategic role of information in the enterprise. Thus we've heard the terms strategic information management, strategic information planning, strategic control of information. But what do all these terms mean? What's the difference between all this recent attention to strategic and what we've always done? Is it just hype, the latest buzzword? Is it old wine poured into new bottles? Or is there something of substance to the idea? This brief article, based on ideas first articulated at the 46th Biennial FID Congress in Madrid, Spain in October 1992, examines this proposition.
