Classification of Linguistics

This is a report of three classes in DRTC, extending over four and half hours, given by Dr Ranganathan, during September 1963. Describes the various possible facets of subjects in linguistics and also the principles and methodology in the design of a classification schedule. Defines the term 'Linguistics'. Language, Stage, Variant, and Element are taken to be four possible [P] Iikely to occur in a subject of optimum depth going with the (BC) P Linguistics. With the help of the ubiquitous Wall-Picture Principle, determines the sequence of the four [P]. Shows how the monolithic pure notation creates homonym in (CN). To resolve this homonym, an ugly cluttering of (CS) comma (,) was permitted, But as this was against aesthetics, and as this solution introduce's rigidity in the facet formula, it was abandoned. As a consequence of this, it was decided to use different species of ordinal numbers for the different Levels of [P], Allots different sectors to different Levels of [P] with the help of the Principle of Inversion. Concludes with a tentative solution for the problem of classifying the newly arising field of formal linguistics.
