Emotional Intelligence & Managerial Effectiveness : Role of Rational Emotive Behaviour

In recent times, emotional intelligence has been hailed by both academicians and practitioners as a soft skill that is critical for managers to succeed in their professional roles. Considerable research interest is seen today in the hitherto neglected area of human emotions and their impact at the workplace. This paper presents the results of an empirical study undertaken to see the influence of emotional intelligence and rational emotive behaviour on managerial effectiveness. The study sample consisted of 305 managers from diverse industries in the public and private sectors. Results showed that both the variables positively influence managerial effectiveness. Further, rational emotive behaviour was found to moderate the relationship between emotional intelligence and managerial effectiveness. Implications of these findings are discussed in the paper.
