Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that can be treated, but as yet it cannot be cured. People who are diabetic end up getting other medical problems as well with one thing in common - a problem with insulin. Diabetes is recognized to be common in Asian Indians. The number of people with diabetes in the world is expected to double between the years 2000 and 2030. The greatest absolute increase in the number of people with diabetes will be in India. Type 2 diabetes (Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes, NIDDM) is a complex disease that involves impaired insulin secretion by pancreatic beta-cells and defects in action on its target tissues (insulin resistance).
