In as early as the twentieth century, numerous studies with creatine feeding were carried out, and it appears that the influence of creatine supplementation on exercise performance in human beings has been studied. Creatine in its tree (Cr free) and phosphorylated (Cr phos) form has been recognised as a key intermediate of skeletal muscle metabolism. In humans over 95 per cent of the total creatine (Cr tot) content is located in skeletal muscles of which, approximately a third is in its free form (Cr free). Dally turnover of creatine to creatinine for a 70 kg male has been estimated to be around two g, and the Cr tot content to be around 140g.
