In India the crop residues from the staple feed for the livestock and are a potential source of energy for the ruminants. Unfortunately their usefulness is limited due to low digestibility and low crude protein content. Treatment with different chemicals have been used to increase their digestibility. Recently the use of ammonia (produced from urea) for the treatment of pool quality roughages has been tried.
