Treatment of straw with ammonia has been reported to increase its intake and digestibility. Oji and Mowat have shown an increased rate and extent of dry matter digestibility in vitro with maize stover ammoniated at elevated temperatures. However, the information on the extent of microbial colonisation and utilisation of fibre components of ammoniated straw are lacking.
