The reduction of food loss is an important part of the effort to meet the nutritional needs of the world's expanding population. Food loss is usually minimized by the use of chemicals such as antimicrobials insecticides, and sprout inhibitors, but such chemicals (or their metabolic or reaction products) may themselves be a source of hazard.
