Birth Weight in Relation to the Iron Status of Pregnant Women

During the antenatal period, the requirement for iron increases several folds due to the demands of the growing foetus as well as expanding maternal red cell mass and these often outstrip the available supply of iron from the diet and iron stores. This inturn leads to iron depletion.
