In Vitro Effect of Vitamin E on Oxidant-Antioxidant Status of Erythrocytes in Children with Acute Glomerulonephritis

Interest has grown in the role of oxygen derived free radicals such as superoxide anion and hydroxyl radicals as mediator of tissue damage in many disease processes. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) a free radical induced phenomenon was reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of glomerular disease such as nephrotic syndrome and acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) in children. APSGN is an inflammatory glomerular disease caused by the (5-hemolytic streptococcal infection of throat and skin. Epidemics of APSGN have been reported in different parts of the world. In APSGN children, blood loses its antioxidant defence and the children might suffer from prolonged oxidative stress with increased susceptibility to LPO and osmotic lysis. Therefore, it is expected that if APSGN children are supplemented with antioxidants along with the conventional antibiotic, it could prove beneficial in the quick amelioration of the disease.
