Enzymes are proteins, which function, in living organisms to regulate various metabolic activities. Like other proteins their structural and functional specificities are determined primarily by genes. The term isozyme was introauced by Market and Moliar to typify the multiple molecular forms of an enzyme, which probably possess similar functions and may differ in their kinetics and electrophoretic characteristics. Acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2) which is present in erythrocyte and o+her tissues function as flavin mono nucleotide phosphatase. This enzyme, controlled by locus is polymorphic with six distinct heritable forms viz., ACP1 BA, ACP1 B, ACP1 CA, ACP1 CB and ACP1 C.
