While a variety of deficiency diseases exist among expectant and nursing mothers and other population groups, the major types observed are protein energy malnutrition, hypovitaminosis A and anemia. The low serum retinol levels among expectant mothers affect the foetal stores of vitamin A and the most lamentable consequence of such poor vitamin A status of the infant, is blindness. Hence improving the vitamin A status of the expectant mother will go a long way in preventing child blindness.
