I was asked to discuss the requirements of pre-school children, but I intend to concentrate on the first few months of life. We are accustomed to see PEM, and particularly kwashiorkor, presenting at 12 to 18 months, when the infant is weaned and replaced by a new baby. Therefore all the emphasis has been on the pre-school child. However, I believe that the trouble begins much earlier.

Abstract

I was asked to discuss the requirements of pre-school children, but I intend to concentrate on the first few months of life. We are accustomed to see PEM, and particularly kwashiorkor, presenting at 12 to 18 months, when the infant is weaned and replaced by a new baby. Therefore all the emphasis has been on the pre-school child. However, I believe that the trouble begins much earlier.
