Nutritive Value of Jack (Artocarpus heterophyllus, Lam) Fruit Waste for Cattle

As a part of a comprehensive scheme to evolve economic livestock rations sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, several of the agro-industrial by - products, which now go as waste are being subjected to detailed study by feeding them to different species and classes of animals. Jack fruit is one of the popular fruits of India and the tree is grown extensively in west coast, Assam and Bihar. Out of a total area of 16,000 ha under jack cultivation in India, Kerala has 2400 ha. Summer is the season for jack fruit in India. The pericarp of the fruit (jack fruit waste) is a prized cattle feed relished by cattle. The results of preliminary experiments carried out with jack fruit waste to explore its potential as cattle feed are presented in this paper.
