II.SIR Edward Mellanby, G.B.E., K.C.B., M.D., F.R.C.P., F.R.S.

Edward Mellanby was born in West Hartlepool, the youngest of a family of six children and the last of four sons, one of whom died in childhood. John Mellanby, his father, was the manager of a shipyard in the Furness- Withy Company; his mother was born in Edinburgh.
