It is now well established that protein malnutrition (Kwashiorkor) is widely prevalent among malnourished children belonging to low income groups of population in tropical and subtropical countries.

The syndrome has been shown to be caused primarily by a deficiency of protein in the diet even though vitamin deficiencies may be associated with the condition.
