Non communicable diseases are a leading threat to health and development. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiology characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Diabetes is one of four priority non-communicable diseases identified by the World Health Organization and the others include cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory disease.
