Impact Assessment of Irrigation on Food and Nutrition Security of Adolescent Girls
Subscribe/Renew Journal
In command area, farmers are tempted to shift to non-food cash crops like sugarcane, tobacco and cotton owing to water security. This probably may affect the food consumption and thus nutrients. Since, micronutrient security is at threat rather than macro nutrients and adolescence is the delicate stage it becomes essential to study. Changes during adolescence suggest an increased need for specific nutrients. The rapid increase in body size specially the increase in blood volume, envisages a higher need for iron. In addition onset of menstruation augments the iron requirement. Failure in meeting the requirement of this nutrient often precipitates anaemia which in turn affects the capacity to bear brunt of pregnancy and lactation in future. Reports on prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls indicated that incidence increases from 10 years onwards and carries on to be high till 18 years of age. The prevalence was reported to range from 65 to 75 per cent in under privileged adolescent girls of India.
