Prevalence of Low Birth Weight Infant and its Correlates with Maternal's and Child's Bio-Demographic Factors: a Registry Based Study in a Northeast State of India
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Birth weight is one of the most sensitive health indicators to determine the survival status of a newborn baby. The weight of the baby at birth is influenced by the nutritional status of the mothers before and during pregnancy which is indirectly affected by the socio-economic conditions of the family and cultural factors of the society. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of very low birth weight and to explore the association between the bio-demographic factors of the mothers with very low birth weight infants. The study was a descriptive, retrospective study based on secondary data published by Government of Sikkim. The prevalence of very low birth weight infant (weight less than 1500 g) was 0.61 per 1000 live births during the study period. There was no significant association between the age of the mother and birth order of the child with very low birth weight babies. Significant association was observed between the gestational age and very low birth weight born babies.
